The Homegrown Terrorist
Posted by citiz7 under Greg's Blog (edit this)
My first thoughts today were about the root causes of events like what has happened at Virginia Tech this past Monday. I kept thinking about civility in society and while I am sure our lack of civility contributes to horrific events, we must deal with in sure and steadfast ways, persons that are of danger to themselves and others. Our laws and our rights are often preventing us from dealing effectively with dangerous persons. I do not suggest we change the constitution or that we take rights away from anyone.
We presently have methods of holding and even institutionalizing persons with mental issues that place themselves and others in danger. If my family or yours felt we were a danger to ourselves and or others they certainly could initiate proceedings to place me or you into an institution where we could recieve help and be removed from society. I encourage this process be made easier for non family members to initiate.
It seems to me from the interviews and stories I have read that plenty of people knew that Cho Seung-Hui, the student that went on a killing spree, was extreemely disturbed. I find it confusing, that someone did not find a way to put him into a mental hospital until such time, as he was able to cope with the actual circumstances of our world. If this was not possible because of a burden of proof those around him could not meet, then perhaps this burden of proof must be lowered. Our Legislators spend an incredible amount of time on issues that don’t matter to people. We must hold them, the Legislators accountable as they write the laws. It’s so common for the Legislators to blame the Courts or Lawyers for allowing persons like this to remain in society, when in reality they the Legislators have control of our laws. The blame game does not solve anything.
Each person in the Legislatures of the United States, and for that matter in any individual State, that has accepted money and voted with the NRA on bills that allow the continued purchase of automatic weapons, must be held accountable. Cho Seung Hui, purchased completely legally, the automatic weapons he used in this atracity. Please vote those Legislators out of office at the next election for their particular office!
My thoughts are with all the families of the teachers and students that lost their loved ones last Monday. Please remember always the victims. Contributor - Greg Shelton

I feel it’s a time for reflection and contemplation and not blaming. Later in the week will be soon enough. There is just too much pain today. All have been affected by the Virginia Tech shootings. I will keep all in my thoughts! Contributor - Greg Shelton

Impeachment?

This was originally written by me last week on Wenesday April 12th but I have added a bit more today considering the Rove and Gonzales lost emails we have heard about over the last several days. Here is the original writing and I will follow up with paragraphs in italics at the bottom.
Impeachment?
I've not observed a President work the way George W. Bush has in my lifetime. He seems to believe he can break the law and then go back and ask to have congress change the law that he has broken. The two examples of this that come to mind, are his use of the wiretaps on phone calls from inside to outside the country or from outside to inside the country, where one or more of the parties is a suspected terrorist, without an approval from the courts. A system was in place to get approval for this kind of wiretap that was completely legal. The President has admitted he deliberately bypassed this rule of law and instead did the wiretaps totally covertly and outside the law. Once he was caught and it looked like congress would end his criminal activity, he then decided to negotiate with congress and ask for an update to the law. And of course this was during the time when Republicans had a majority in both houses and they did exactly as he asked. He still broke the law, don’t let anyone tell you differently. This is of course absolutely backwards and was a criminal act on his part. Now in the last few days the Supreme court has ordered the EPA to enforce the law of the land that requires limitations on certain pollutants. You see that way back in the Presidents early Presidency he told the EPA not to enforce these pollutant restrictions and thereby negate the law of the land passed by the United States Congress. The EPA is part of the Executive Branch and reports directly to the President. The congress passes laws. that the EPA is required to enforce, and the Congress has the right to oversite through reports and hearings. Here is a case where the 3 branches of government, the Executive, the Legislative, and the Supreme Court have worked properly and checked the Executive, (President Bush). The President is not above the law! His response to the Supreme Courts decision was to say that he is going to do nothing, (which is just what he has already done) but will ask congress to change the law. This again is just as in the previous instance where he breaks the law and then asks congress to adjust for him and his political ideals. He is not King and his acting as if he is one may just be impeachable! Whether that is in the best interest of the nation at this point is debatable, however each time he ignores the vast majority of the people and ignores United States Law he gets closer and closer to the possibility of impeachment. I would be worried about this as should he actually be found guilty, and I do believe he is guilty, then Vice President Cheney would take office. I don’t think the nation could take even a few months of his Presidency. Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi is next in line to succeed to the Presidency after the Vice President. I prefer to see a President legitimately elected over succession to the office. Legitimate elections have proven to be difficult over the last eight years. Seventy percent of the voters seem to be tired of the lies and law breaking of the President and are tired of his war with Iraq. Most of those seventy percent do support the war on terror and fully capable of distinguishing between the two wars. Why do you think the President can not distinguish between these two wars?

The latest news we hear from this poorest of poor Executive Branch's White House, is that the emails concerning the firing of federal prosecutors were lost. Not only were they lost but they were on Republican Party computers rather than White House computers. Its hard to imagine these sensitive emails about politically inspired firings of federal prosecutors by the Attorney General were on the Republican Party computers for any reason other than to hide the information. The problem is that they have said these firings were for poor performance of the prosecutors, however the emails that we had heard about supposedly show they were politially inspired within the White House. Karl Rove was at the heart of it but we have also heard the President discussed the firings at some point prior to them happening. Attorney General Gonzales is the head of our Justice Department and it is supposed to be above the frey of politics however he was involved in the discussions via email and with his own assistants and attorneys. First the President should not have anyone in his administration, including himself contacting the Justice Department Attorney General to ask or insist that the Department fire anyone for political reasons. The Justice Department is not a political wing of the administration, it is rather supposed to be fair to everyone prosecuting cases based on criminal activity and not political ends. It seems the porsecutors were not working fast or hard enough on the cases agains democrats and were proceeding on cases against republicans. The President originally appointed all these prosecutors and they are of his own political persuasion but they work the way they are supposed to. They work on the cases with the best merit, not on the ones that are good for the Republican Party and the Administration. We must insist these emails be recovered as we all know they can be. We must also insist that the Senate and House of Representatives continue to monitor and watch the Executive Branch. The Congress must use its power of oversite and each day Impeachment seems more and more likely. Tapes being lost in Nixons time and now emails in Bushs time. He seems intent on being the most shameful President in history! Contributor - Greg Shelton

Stuck in the old ways-Dangerous Ways

Our natures are conservative and our challenge is to act and behave in healthy wise ways. Since we have natures that are so conservative and comfortable with what we have done and been taught, we are poor at adapting. We as societies and people have created a culture of “good ole boy networks” (Women are part of these networks. Don’t allow yourself the luxury of believing differently Ladies.) What are the networks? Well they are a vast multitude of groups and organizations, nations and governments, business systems and economic systems, and religions.
It is my view that the Conservative’s and Republicans are much more deeply entrenched in this antiquated way of thinking and being. I am much more Liberal today then I was when I was younger, although this does not mean I vote and think in line with the Democratic Party on every issue. What made me change? I am quite sure its the experiences I have had, including education, suffering, heartache and the ability to compare and think about various issues with historical references. These are the things it took for me to get to the point where I am today with regards to my personal world view and philosophy. Others I am sure reach this point without the suffering and heartache. Everyone may have a very different path to reach these similar views.
Lets take two examples I will make up as I go. I use these examples because I believe this is the natural progression of men and women thinking. I want you to know, I believe I too have this potential and its only buffered by my belief and knowledge of what I am going to share with you in these pages. I personally have been stuck in some old stinking thinking ways for several years but am going to break the cycle by contributing and participating. Now on to the examples.
Example #1 The formation of the social network known as Marriage: Imagine if you can the early time of humanity when humans began to think and progress. At that time superstitions and actual logical thinking combined created some good and yet strange ideas. It had to be apparent that men and women needed to form a closer bond to successfully raise children to adulthood. In some cases this may have been a tight relationship and in others it may have been a loose confederation between two people. Somewhere along the way superstition entered the scene and the more intelligent of men and women took advantage of the peoples superstitions and formed some form of religion where rules were made for the primitive society. Those that were the smarter of the groups became the witch doctors and or priests. They were able to dictate to the population based on their ability to commune with the spirits in nature and the deities they had created. Men in these positions would want to strengthen their control over others including their mates and create the institution of marriage to control their wives and children while being able to carry on themselves with little or no rules. Ok, that’s just a possibility, but how probable do you think it is? On to my next example.
Example #2 The formation of the food distribution network. For at least ten thousand years humans have gathered, hunted or grown their food within walking distance of their homes. In the earliest times men hunted and gathered and were nomadic. Over the years we humans got pretty good at growing food and many eastern and western cultures prospered. As some of us prospered and became wealthier and wealthier the growing of food came under control of fewer and fewer people as in feudal times, when a King or Prince owned the land and serfs farmed it for them for a exorbitant fee or taxes. Even then the rich got richer and the poor got poorer. So times changed and people rebelled and governments formed for the benefit of the people in some places. Still the basic premise of the smarter man who becomes the richer man through his innovation or ability to inherit from his parents controls enough power so as to employee workers to his endeavors and become even wealthier. And to the point where this example began..food distribution. Some of these wealthier people were and are farmers and groups of farmers and corporations. The larger they became the more power they wielded and thereby they through their intelligence took advantage of what we call a capitalist society. They grew more and used more intensive farming techniques until they were able to lower their prices and drive the small family farmer out of business. And what happened then? Well the large wealthy farmers bought the best land in the best climates for their farms and developed a food distribution system that we have grown to depend on. It of course relies on transportation heavily and food is distributed from thousands and thousands of miles away. My point here is this, in todays age with global warming we have cut off our nose and fingers. We expend thousands of times the carbon units to transport the food than it cost to grow the food. What does this mean. We have, messed up big time. We now need to reduce carbon usage. uht oh!
Republicans of course find global warming to be a hoax because they are worried about keeping people working and keeping the rich getting richer with as little change as possible. Change is dangerous. Our fathers taught us best. God’s laws are God’s laws. Even those of us that are not rich are often Republican because we have bought into the old ways and the nature of man.

Hello,
Welcome to my first blog and my first entry. When you return, and continue to read my ongoing posts, I sure do hope you find that my grammar and writing abilities improve. I have never felt my communication skills are up to the level they should be to become an author. My websites and these blogs will test me in many ways, but primarily in patience with myself. As you peruse these postings, I also hope you will explore my other pages which are under construction. This Web Blog is my first project however and I am only going to work on one at a time and try to organize myself to accomplish a certain number of tasks each day. The site that will be at http//:www.gregoryshelton.com/ will be a rather in depth explanation of what it is I am personally trying to accomplish for myself in the near and long term.
This Blog is in a subdirectory of http//:www.citizensparticipationnetwork.com/. The address of the Blog is http//:www.citizensparticipationnetwork.com/citizen7blog/. The primary page of the “Citizens Participation Network” will have links to my other pages and links to friends I make on the web. It will also hold the most popular blog postings that you the readers like the most. This will be determined by polls which I will set up on the blog page.
My intention is to create a post 5 days a week, Monday through Friday. The topics will bounce from what’s happening in the daily news to my opinions about what changes I feel could be made in sectors of our nation and even world. Things like business and media, religion and society, government (all branches and all levels)and politicians, will be common topics. I will discuss elections and will post a countdown to the day we can say George W. Bush is out of our White House.
I will be having other authors post their ideas and posts here as well, so my opinions and ideas will not be the only ones you hear. There will be some real diversity in the various authors opinions. You will be able to comment on any posts that you feel so inclined to comment on. You will need to register and will be asked a silly question or two in order to eliminate and prevent spammers. Some of these addons to this software, I will be adding over the next couple of weeks.
Thanks for bookmarking this site. Please watch it and help it grow!
